Day 5 - Budapest 1

We are on our own today so we big bussed to the stop by Margaret Island. As most of you know, I am actually a Margaret on official forms. If you’ve known me long enough you’ve heard me say, “Don’t call me Margaret unless you can deduct me on your tax return.” I’ve not always been a fan because I’m a much better Maggie than Margaret. But, I am named after my maternal grandmother, who died when my Mom was 2 1/2. So I have to at least respect the name, right?

Martha’s color: I can attest to the name thing. When we all moved to Dallas in 1991 to stand up a new office, the IT folks were setting up the phone system. They called me and said “Hello Margaret - do you want to be listed as Margaret or Maggie?” I said, “first you called Martha. And second, I just met her. Do NOT call her Margaret!”

So we visited the island and rented a tiny electric car to go from end to end. While I told Martha this was to save her from excessive walking, it was really so I don’t lose my golf cart driving skills.

Wiki: Margaret Island is a tranquil getaway within the city. Pedestrian promenades navigate around parkland, an art nouveau water tower, the ruins of a 13th-century Dominican convent, and a musical fountain.

Happily there was a Margaret’s Restaurant & Pub where we “rested” after driving the island and walking the Margaret Bridge.
