Before we left home, Martha and I talked about how many moving parts there were to this trip, how many reservations, and how many things could go wrong or get messed up or just be beyond our control. We agreed that we would just roll with it, whatever “it” was.
Today was our first real test. We got to Glasgow early and waited on our 12:22 train north. The train was delayed due to an issue with a stalled train on the track somewhere on the journey. No problem. We stand around for 45 minutes after scheduled departure time, and the big board continues to say delayed. At this point we find seat and still check the board every few minutes. There are also numerous announcements that the train is delayed “we are sorry for the inconvenience.” In the meantime, trains are coming and going to different points throughout Scotland.
Then I look up, and our train isn’t on the board anymore. We race to the ticket office and ask what happened. And of course the guy says, “That train just left.” Wait, what??? The board continued to say delayed and never said a platform number. He looks at us, we look at him, ask if there are other trains today - I already know there are none.
Our next option was a bus. The bus terminal was a hike, uphill, in the rain (you can’t make this up). But we made it.
So we are now on a 3.5 hour bus to Fort William. Because that’s what happens when you miss the train and you have to be there tonight! Oh, and the bus started out 20 minutes late.
Hey, but since the train was delayed, we can get a refund, I’m sure we will not encounter any issues there.
