Day 3 - Boston: Missing Lainie and Matt

You may be wondering how a 2 month trip came about. I’ll tell you, it has a lot to do with loss and believing life is very short.

Sunday was the first anniversary of the loss of our great friend Lainie Bryant. Lanie passed away in a freak golf cart accident and all of those who loved her were in shock and mourning. We continue to miss her every damn day.

Today is my brother Matt’s birthday. Matt passed away last September of a crazy brain tumor.

These two losses one on top of the other, freaked me out. I struggled to comprehend why. My answer was to try to live the hell out of whatever time I have because, obviously, we have no idea of how much time is left on our personal clocks.

So I volunteered for the US Open and talked to Martha about continuing the trip from Boston to the UK; with a slight detour to Vermont for Martha’s 50th state. We will meet friends in Iceland for a cruise and the trip will culminate in Ireland with our cousins, in our mostly annual remembrance of Grandma Nona.

To me, spending time with the people we love is the best way to live. This summer we are doing it in other countries.
